PreVeterinary Medicine Advising Program

The College of Arts and Sciences offers programs for students who wish to pursue professional careers in medically-related fields. These pre-medical programs are designed to provide a sound basis in biology and chemistry, along with coursework in physics and mathematics. The pre-medicine/pre-osteopathy, pre-veterinary medicine, pre-dentistry and pre-pharmacy programs are intended to prepare students for advanced, professional study in the medical sciences.
Admission requirements differ among medical schools.These programs meet the coursework requirements for admission to most medical schools. Students who wish to pursue a pre-medical program would be well advised to check carefully the admissions requirements of the professional schools they wish to enter. Students should also seek advice regularly from their faculty advisors.
Students may pursue pre-medical programs under the Bachelor of Arts degree, the Bachelor of Science degree or a carefully designed Bachelor of Integrative Studies degree. The pre-medical programs serve as advising programs for students in the B.A., B.S. and B.I.S. programs.
PreVeterinary Medicine, a pre-professional advising program, provides students an opportunity to prepare for further training in veterinary medicine after completing their undergraduate degree. Students take courses that prepare them for coursework in veterinary medicine school and either the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) or Graduation Record Examination (GRE), depending on the institution. In addition to declaring this program, students must be admitted to a bachelor's degree program in the College of Arts and Sciences. Admissions requirements for veterinary schools can be fulfilled in the BS in Zoology degree.

The university affirmatively strives to provide educational opportunities and access to students with varied backgrounds, those with special talents and adult students who graduated from high school three or more years ago.
Freshman Students on the Kent Campus: The freshman admission policy on the Kent Campus is selective. Admission decisions are based upon the following: cumulative grade point average, ACT and/or SAT scores, strength of high school college preparatory curriculum and grade trends. The Admissions Office at the Kent Campus may defer the admission of students who do not meet admissions criteria but who demonstrate areas of promise for successful college study. Deferred applicants may begin their college coursework at one of seven Regional Campuses of Kent State University. Freshman Students on the Regional Campuses: Kent State campuses at Ashtabula, East Liverpool, Geauga, Salem, Stark, Trumbull and Tuscarawas, as well as the Regional Academic Center in Twinsburg, have open enrollment admission for students who hold a high school diploma, GED or equivalent.

English Language Proficiency Requirements for International Students: All international students must provide proof of English language proficiency (unless they meet specific exceptions) by earning a minimum 525 TOEFL score (71 on the Internet-based version), minimum 75 MELAB score, minimum 6.0 IELTS score or minimum 48 PTE Academic score, or by completing the ELS level 112 Intensive Program. The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine recommends an organic chemistry laboratory, but it is not required. However, organic chemistry laboratory course are required by other veterinary schools.
The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine requires one semester of writing/composition. Other veterinary schools require two semesters; ENG 21011 is recommended.
Additional mathematics courses are recommended, but not required.
Students may choose any upper-division BSCI courses to fulfill this requirement. The following courses are recommended: BSCI 30518, BSCI 30519, BSCI 40143, BSCI 40174, BSCI 40430, BSCI 40433, BSCI 40515, BSCI 40556, BSCI 40581.
Courses in art, communication studies, economics, history, music, literature, psychology and/or sociology are recommended to meet veterinary school prerequisites.
