Description

The Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing prepares students for the registered nurse profession. The curriculum is designed to meet the health care needs of the 21st century. The curriculum focuses on the registered nurse's role in the communities, hospitals, clinics, and home health care. Graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

The Nursing major comprises the following concentrations:

  • The LPN to ADN concentration is a completer program for students who are licensed practical nurses.
  • The Paramedic to ADN concentration is a completer program for students who are certificed paramedics.

Admission Requirements

The university affirmatively strives to provide educational opportunities and access to students with varied backgrounds, those with special talents and adult students who graduated from high school three or more years ago.

Kent State campuses at Ashtabula, East Liverpool, Geauga, Salem, Stark, Trumbull and Tuscarawas, and the Regional Academic Center in Twinsburg, have open enrollment admission for students who hold a high school diploma, GED or equivalent.

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  1. Use the nursing process to meet self-care demands of individuals in structured settings.
  2. Demonstrate therapeutic communication skills in interactions with patients, families and health team members.
  3. Perform safely the nursing skills and techniques identified in all nursing courses.
  4. Function within the legal and ethical guidelines of the nursing role as a provider of care, manager of care and member of the profession.

All students in an applied or technical associate degree program at Kent State University must complete the following university requirements for graduation.

Required anatomy and physiology, microbiology, chemistry and nutrition courses must have been completed within the past seven years prior to admission to the program. Students who have successfully completed ATTR 25057 and ATTR 25058 (or EXSC 25057 and EXSC 25058) may use those courses in place of BSCI 11010 and BSCI 11020. Students who have successfully completed NUTR 43521 may use it in place of NUTR 23511 or (NUTR 33512).

 3 credit hours are required for Kent Core (University Requirements). This program requires a total of 6 credit hours to earn the degree.

Progression Requirements

To be able to register for Nursing Technology (NRST) courses, students must be accepted to technical study. Acceptance is a selective process. Criteria for acceptance are the following:

  • Minimum 2.700 overall GPA
  • Minimum C grade in high school or college-level courses in algebra, biology and chemistry;
  • Completion of developmental coursework prescribed by placement testing
