Description
The Pre-Pharmacy Advising Program is a non-degree, pre-professional program that provides students with an opportunity to prepare for further training in pharmacy schools or colleges. Students work closely with their pre-pharmacy faculty advisor to ensure they meet the admissions requirements for the pharmacy school or college of their choice.
The program's curriculum aligns with admission criteria for the the Doctor of Pharmacy degree offered by the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). As an alternate, students interested in applying to the NEOMED can satisfy all pre-pharmacy requirements by completing the B.S. degree in Chemistry with the Biochemistry concentration. In this degree program, students either complete four years of study at Kent State, or (with careful planning) complete three years of study at Kent State and satisfy the remaining requirements of their B.S. degree with coursework completed at NEOMED.
The College of Arts and Sciences offers advising non-degree programs for students who wish to pursue professional careers in a medical field, including medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine. The curriculum in these pre-medical programs is designed to prepare students for advanced, professional study by providing a sound basis in biology and chemistry, physics and mathematics.
These advising programs meet the coursework requirements for admission to most medical schools, although admission requirements may differ per school. Students who wish to pursue a graduate medical program would be well advised to check carefully the admissions requirements of the professional schools they wish to enter. Students should also seek advice regularly from their faculty advisors.
Admission Requirements
Students must be admitted to a bachelor's degree program in the College of Arts and Sciences to declare this non-degree advising program.

These economics, mathematics and biological chemistry courses are required prerequisites for admission to the pharmacy program at NEOMED and are recommended for other pharmacy programs.
Pre-Professional Information
- It is imperative that students meet with the pre-pharmacy faculty advisor immediately upon entering Kent State University. This allows students to most efficiently meet the requirements for admission to a number of pharmacy schools. These schools typically require coursework totaling 60-62 credit hours, which can be completed in two years. However, the coursework may vary based on the requirements of different pharmacy schools.
- To better prepare for admission to pharmacy programs, additional courses are recommended:
