Description
The Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction provides a wide range of graduate study opportunities in progressive, research-based curriculum and teaching practices. The program prepares educators for continuing professional development, education in a multicultural society and leadership for curriculum reform and renewal.
The Curriculum and Instruction major comprises the following concentrations:
- Curriculum and Teaching Studies
- English/Language Arts Education
- Mathematics Education
- Middle Childhood Education
- Physical Education Teacher Education
- Science Education
- Secondary Education
- Social Studies Education
The concentrations do not lead to teacher education licensure or endorsement with the exception of the Physical Education Teacher Education concentration. The Physical Education Teacher Education concentration may lead to a multi-age pre-kindergarten through grade 12 license to teach physical education in Ohio. The program includes field experience components at the elementary and secondary levels, and culminates with a full-semester student teaching experience.

Admission Requirements
The Secondary Education concentration does not allow direct admission; students may enter only with a change of major initiated by their faculty advisor. This concentration is for students who have completed the coursework for the M.A.T. degree in Secondary Education but who have not completed the teacher licensure requirements.
Applicants to the Physical Education Teacher Education concentration will be assessed holistically, considering academic credentials; standardized test scores of reading, writing, and mathematics; academic or professional references; non-academic dimensions; and other specific program criteria.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university1 for unconditional admission
- Minimum 3.000 undergraduate GPA on a 4.000 point scale for unconditional admission
- Official transcript(s)
- GRE scores if GPA is below 3.000 (Physical Education Teacher Education concentration only, effective Spring 2021, GRE scores requirement will be replaced with the Praxis Core tests in reading, writing and mathematics 2)
- Application essay
- Two letters of recommendation
- Interview (Physical Education Teacher Education concentration only)
- English language proficiency - all international students must provide proof of English language proficiency (unless they meet specific exceptions) by earning one of the following:
- Minimum 550 TOEFL PBT score (paper-based version)
- Minimum 79 TOEFL IBT score (Internet-based version)
- Minimum 77 MELAB score
- Minimum 6.5 IELTS score
- Minimum 58 PTE score
- Minimum 110 Duolingo English Test score

1 | Applicants to the Physical Education Teacher Education concentration who do not have a physical education or related undergraduate degree may be required to complete additional prerequisite courses prior to program admission. |
2 | All initial teacher licensure candidates are required to demonstrate basic competency in reading, writing and mathematics prior to admission. To demonstrate these competencies, students are required to take the Praxis Core tests in Reading, Mathematics, and Writing unless exempted by GRE scores fewer than five years old at the time of application. In order to gain exemption from Praxis CORE requirements, a student must achieve at or above the 50th percentile scores on the GRE Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing tests. Students who have not taken the GRE are strongly encouraged to take the Praxis CORE tests to demonstrate these competencies, rather than GRE.
